Wolverine Fire Protection Co: A business built on PURPOSE
In 1958, Ed and Faith Corcoran started Wolverine Fire Protection Co. out of their garage in Mt. Morris, Mich.听Their team was a hungry group with a humble beginning.
Today, Wolverine is one of the largest independently owned fire protection contractors in the United States, serving an array of customers nationwide. The path has been bumpy at times, but the company endured and grew tremendously.
What are the roots of Wolverine鈥檚 success? Strong relationships and an even stronger belief in its values.
Enduring Principles
鈥淭he company was founded on the idea that when you take care of people, they come back,鈥 said Amy Shanks, Wolverine鈥檚 Accounting Supervisor and a granddaughter of founders Ed and Faith.
鈥淲e鈥檝e always prided ourselves on quality workmanship, getting it done on time, and giving back to the community.鈥
Tim and Martin (Marty) Corcoran, Wolverine鈥檚 Vice President and CEO, respectively, believe the way their parents Ed and Faith were raised still contributes to the company鈥檚 success.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been sort of a tradition of each generation to carry on the values the company was established on,鈥 Tim said.
鈥淥ur Value System鈥
As the company has prospered, it鈥檚 strengthened its efforts to help people.
鈥淢om and Dad were always philanthropic,鈥 Tim said. 鈥淭hey helped because people needed it. That鈥檚 our value system.鈥
Wolverine and the Corcoran family have supported many organizations, including:
- Holy Cross Children鈥檚 Services
- Corcoran House
- Mayo Clinic
- Doctors Without Borders
- Ronald McDonald House
- Several organizations benefitting veterans
Doing right by others has been a constant thread in the Wolverine story. It鈥檚 often been the bridge over troubled waters. As a result, the commitment to helping hasn鈥檛 waned, it鈥檚 gotten stronger.
Leveraging Expertise
So much has changed since 1958, including Wolverine. Adapting has sometimes been challenging (the family joked about Ed鈥檚 strong objection to computers). But with the help of others, it became easier.
鈥淲e鈥檝e been fortunate to have so many strong relationships throughout the years,鈥 Amy said.
鈥淲e鈥檝e had help since the beginning on all sorts of stuff,鈥 Marty said.
The Corcorans point to the employees of Wolverine, its suppliers and subcontractors, as well as outside experts, as drivers of the company鈥檚 growth. Without a doubt, it鈥檚 been a team effort.
鈥淲e are a sprinkler company. That鈥檚 what we know,鈥 Amy said. 鈥淪o, it鈥檚 important to get perspectives from bankers, the bonding company, accountants and quality consultants. We鈥檝e gone down that road many times.鈥
The road includes 熊猫视频, where Wolverine has been a client for more than a decade.
鈥淲e鈥檝e relied on 熊猫视频鈥檚 experience for so many things 鈥 audits, tax returns and advice, consulting, and more,鈥 Amy said. 鈥淭hey want us to succeed, you can tell.
鈥淚n fact, our first ever client contacts were Randy Rupp [熊猫视频鈥檚 former CEO] and Stacie Kwaiser [熊猫视频鈥檚 current CEO].鈥
Longevity and Success
Seemingly everything has changed for Wolverine since the beginning. But the ideas born in the garage remain intact. It鈥檚 a testament to conviction.
For the company and the Corcoran family, strong relationships and steadfast devotion to their values have been the building blocks. The strategy has not only stood the test of time, it鈥檚 bred incredible (and deserved) success.
